Daddy A Go Go - Rock of All Ages

Reviewed by Gregory Keer

When I was in middle school, I attempted to follow a dream to play keyboards in a band. I fulfilled it – for an hour. The band was called Torn Up Shoes and we did more talking about fame and fans than playing, which we were really bad at, by the way. Now, though, my dream is to be in a band with my kids – just like Daddy A Go Go’s John Boydston and his sons.

Family bonding jangles through this, Boydston's sixth CD since leaving a career as a TV news producer to become a stay-at-home dad. His fellow musicians now include sons Jake (on bass) and Max (guitar), as well as the kids’ contemporaries, Jonathan Paz and Daniel Cohen.

On the dozen tunes – most of which have been written by Boydston -- on Rock of All Ages, Boydston’s dad humor peppers the lyrics (lots of kidding around) while the music jams in roots rock fashion. The title track celebrates the joys of rock ‘n’ roll itself while the rest of the album touches on topics families are all too familiar with, such as missing stuffed animals (“I Lost My Teddy”) and eternal financial wisdom (“Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees”). Then there’s Louis Armstrong’s classic “What a Wonderful World,” done in the style of The Ramones.

Join in on the family affair of this album and be sure to see Boydston leading a bunch of kids in an air guitar orchestra on the video for “School Bus Driver” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdtxyLOdn2Y
