Roger Day - Dream Big!

Reviewed by Gregory Keer

In trying to catch up with some of this year’s family music, I made the happy discovery of Roger Day’s third CD. Bursting with positive messages and positively eclectic sounds, Dream Big! puts Roger into the upper-echelon of dads who make great kid music.

The rollicking title track about imagining anything you want to do kicks the CD off in anthem-like style. “Rumble in the Jungle” lays African beats below the groovy tune subtitled “The Elefunk Song.” Joining Roger on this album (his previous project featured the Indigo Girls and Nanci Griffith) are Billy Jonas, who adds his percussion wackiness to “I Like Yaks,” and The Crickets, lend their legendary rock ‘n’ roll guitar and vocals to “Roly Poly” (yes, it’s about bugs).

More worthwhile audio goodies include “Uno, Dos, Tres,” which teaches the numbers in Spanish); “Hello Sunshine,” which has a sunshiney ‘70s pop style); and “I Love You (More Than My Shoe),” which sports a Dixieland/bluegrass foundation for a sweet and silly tune.

A father of three, volunteer Scout leader, and former coffeehouse music veteran, this Tennessee resident has turned his own big dreams into reality.
